Julia Hörnle LLB (Leeds), Solicitor

Julia Hörnle joined CCLS in May 2000 and is a Lecturer in Internet Law. She studied law and Russian language at the universities of Göttingen and Leeds (1991-1995) and for the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law in Chester (1996-1997). In 1995-1996 she taught German language courses at the University of St Petersburg and gained a postgraduate diploma in European law at the College of Europe at the University of Hamburg. She trained with the law firm of Eversheds, qualifying as a solicitor in 1999 and practised in their London and Brussels Offices. Julia is a German national and speaks fluent German, English and French and some Russian.

Julia is responsible for and teaches on the University of London LLM Internet Law course. She has created and taught courses for our innovative distance learning LLM in Computer and Communications Law, one module on 'Jurisdiction and applicable law' and one module on 'Online dispute resolution'. Julia also teaches a course on e-commerce law for the British Council funded European Young Lawyers Scheme for the College of Law. She is a regular contributor of case reviews and articles to Electronic Business Law (Lexis-Nexis Butterworths). Julia has recently completed a research project on marketing to children, funded by the Office of the Information Commissioner and Lexis-Nexis. This has resulted in a Research Report 'Marketing to Children & the Internet: Data Collection from Children by Website Operators'. She was also involved in the European Commission funded ECLIP research project in 2000-2001.

Julia is a member of the UNECE expert group on Online Dispute Resolution and has organised a symposium in London with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators on the use of ICT in dispute resolution in September 2004. She is studying towards a PhD in this area.


Research Interests

All legal aspects of e-commerce and the Internet, consumer protection issues, advertising regulation, regulatory issues on the Internet generally, jurisdiction and conflict of law issues in e-commerce, private international law, online dispute resolution and ADR, e-government, competition law and commercial law & EU law generally.
