Johanna Gibson BA BA (Hons I), MA, PGDipAppSci, JD (Queensland), PhD (Edinburgh)
Johanna Gibson is Reader in Intellectual Property Law, with degrees in cultural and critical theory, animal sciences, and law. Before joining CCLS, Johanna practised law at Allens Arthur Robinson (Melbourne, Australia) in Intellectual Property, Communications, Media and Technology, and was a lecturer in law at Brunel University, West London, where she taught international intellectual property law on the LLM programme.
Research Interests
Much of Johanna's research is concerned with intellectual property and socio-economic development. She has consulted to the European Patent Office on future patent policy, the UK Patent Office on copyright and the creative economy, and has participated in expert forums on copyright, digital rights management, and human rights and intellectual property. Johanna maintains research interests in legal theory and intellectual property law, traditional knowledge and cultural diversity, and the relationship between intellectual property systems and the narration of culture and innovation. Johanna also works on current policy and developments in the areas of biotechnology and intellectual property aspects of medicine, and has reported to the Scottish Executive on the ethical and legal aspects of genetic sampling and collection, consent, and privacy. Johanna Gibson was generously supported by the AHRC to conduct her research project, Patenting Lives, examining the implications of changes to international intellectual property law for development and diversity. The research project continues with an international network of scholars, a website, project blog, and forthcoming workshops and conference publications. Johanna is editing a collection of materials from the Research Project and the Conference, with the first volume, entitled Patenting Lives: Life Patents, Development and Culture , to be published by Ashgate in 2007. Johanna is also general editor of a new intellectual property series for Ashgate: Intellectual Property, Theory, Culture .
