Research Awards

In collaboration with colleagues in other universities, Janet Dine has received an award of £300,273 from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to report on The Fairtrade Movement, Legal Support and Social Implications. Takis Tridimas has received awards from the European Commission for research into transpositions tender (£20,262) and remedies (£9,114).


Queen Mary Studies in Intellectual Property

The Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary, University of London, has teamed up with international social science publisher Edward Elgar Publishing, to re-launch its prestigious book series Queen Mary Studies in Intellectual Property. The first book in this biannual series, US Intellectual Property Law and Property, is edited by Hugh Hansen from Fordham University School of Law and identifies and addresses the key principles and policies with regard to the protection of intellectual property in the United States. International Arbitration Survey Published

In association with PricewaterhouseCoopers, CCLS has concluded a major empirical survey on corporate attitudes and choices towards dispute resolution. The survey, International Arbitration: A Study into Corporate Attitudes and Practices, found that a significant majority of corporations prefer international arbitration to resolve their cross border disputes. US-China Economic and Security Review Commission

Takis Tridimas was invited to give written and oral testimony to the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission. The Commission was set up by the US Senate to examine the bilateral trade and economic relationship between the United States and China. The hearing took place in Washington DC on 17 March 2006. His testimony centred on the EU exports control regime, in particular, the EU arms embargo on China. Transcripts of his testimony are available at www.uscc.gov.


Willem C Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot

From 7-13 April 2006, CCLS represented Queen Mary, University of London at the 13th Willem C. Vis Arbitral Moot in Vienna, which is the larget moot court competition in the area of international commercial law. The moot team of Joseph Altendorff, Angelica Andre, Maartin Draye, Kristofer Schwarzrock, Lise Svendsen and coaches Angie Raymond and Stavros Brekoulakis, claimed the Frédéric Eisemann Award for first place in orals of the 158 teams from 50 countries taking part. Global Arbitration Review

In February 2006, the first issue of Global Arbitration Review (ISSN: 1749-611X) marked its launch with a signature survey of '45 under 45', who are leaders in the field of International Arbitration. CCLS is represented by Loukas Mistelis, one of just four academics selected, whilst Queen Mary alumni Stefan Kröll and Klaus Reichert also make the list.


Commercial Law: Perspectives & Practice

On 31 January 2006, Butterworths published Commercial Law: Perspectives & Practice (ISBN: 1405710071). This book is co-edited by Loukas Mistelis and contains a collection of essays in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary, University of London by Professor Sir Roy Goode QC, CBE, FBA.


Appointments

CCLS has welcomed 4 new members of staff who have recently joined Queen Mary, University of London. We have two new Professors of Intellectual Property Law, Peter Drahos, who returns to CCLS, and Graeme Dinwoodie. Anjanette Raymond has been appointed Lecturer in Commercial Law, whilst Aqib Khan joins as our new Information and Communication Technololgy Support Officer.


Research Awards

Three members of CCLS have recently received research awards. Duncan Matthews has received an award of £45,447 from the Economic and Social Research Council to report on Intellectual Property Rights and Multilateral Institutions. Graham Dutfield has received an EU Commission award of £11,513 to report on Reflexive Governance in the Public Interest and a Wellcome Trust award of £86,846 for research studentships. Alexandra George has received awards of £1,500 from the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and £200 from the Journal of Brand Management to report on Trade Mark Law and Branding Culture.
